Critical Minerals & Elements
The Canadian Mineral Sector and impact on the Canadian economy continues to experience growth and contributes towards gross domestic product (GDP), employment with significant contributions arising from extraction, primary mining services, and downstream manufacturing. Ongoing investment, high commodity prices, and growing demand across major industrial, transportation, technology, infrastructure, and communications sectors underpin the continued growth and activity within the Mineral sector.
Canada produces over sixty (60) minerals and metals of which thirty-four (34) minerals including rare earth elements (REE) are currently listed as critical towards economic growth, the environment and national security. The value chain respecting critical minerals encompasses five (5) key segments including geoscience, exploration, mineral extraction, intermediate processing, advanced manufacturing, and recycling. In addition, the mineral sector also includes the extraction of precious metals including gold, silver, metallic and industrial metals such as iron, zinc, copper, nickel, and potash. Uranium is a major energy commodity with Canada positioned as the second largest producer globally and has the third largest low-cost uranium reserves.
